Recently, the District of Maine reported a new scam targeting inmates that are incarcerated by contacting their family via email and phone, telling them the inmate qualified for home confinement but a payment of $900 was needed for tracking. In the instance reported to the district, this payment was to be made in advance via CashApp, and an alleged DOJ employee emailed the individual documentation on DOJ letterhead. Fortunately, CashApp flagged it as a scam, and we are glad to hear in this instance the family did not lose any money.
This situation provides an important reminder to remain vigilant for scams designed to target those under our supervision. Please remember that scam phone calls should be reported to the Federal Trade Commission online or by phone at 1(877) 382-4357 (9:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m.).
